Project description:
- The Sheriff’s House is an urban building located at 10 Market Street, New Castle, Delaware 19720. It is part of the First State National Historical Park and is a contributing structure to the New Castle National Historic Landmark Historic District and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The building will be closed to the public during construction; however, the adjacent New Castle Court House Museum and the New Castle Green are expected to remain fully open and accessible to the public during construction.
- The work includes rehabilitation of the Sheriff’s House for occupancy and provision of appropriate allocation of the building’s interior spaces for park operations, visitor services, and potentially compatible non-National Park Service (NPS) uses, or a combination thereof. Rehabilitation will consider park and visitor needs, accessibility, resource preservation, and visitor experience. Potential impacts on historic structures and districts are evaluated based on changes to character-defining features of the resources, which are the characteristics of a historic property that qualify the property for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.
