Project description:
Lyon Shipyard Inc., Norfolk, Va., was recently awarded an estimated $16.4 million contract by the Navy to manage and execute all maintenance, repair, and alterations required to complete the dry-docked phased maintenance availability onboard the USS Dynamic (AFDL-6) and barge (YFND-30).
The work will be performed in Norfolk and is expected to be completed by January 2023. Fiscal 2022 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funds will be obligated at the time of the award. The requirement was competitively procured as a small business set-aside solicited through the beta.sam.gov website, with two offers received. The Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC) in Norfolk is the contracting activity.
The Navy's only operational floating drydock, Dynamic (AFDL 6) changed command Jan. 28 when Lt. Cmdr. Alden Argante relived Lt. Cmdr. Gaston Hatfield Jr. during a ceremony at MARMC. The Dynamic is the Navy’s second oldest vessel, behind only the USS Constitution.
Dynamic has been in service for 78 years and has been the only Navy-operated AFDL in commission since 2011. The single rigid piece, through-type floating drydock is capable of docking mine countermeasure (MCM) and patrol coastal (PC) ships, landing craft utility (LCU), and similar-sized service vessels. It is homeported at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story where it provides docking services in support of MARMC’s ship repair mission.
